Glasgow Short Film Festival, the largest competitive short film festival in Scotland, returns for a ninth year to champion new international film talent and celebrate diverse forms of cinematic expression.
Taking inspiration from the post-punk cinematic new wave of early eighties New York, GSFF declares war on all boring films. From the conflict zones of Syria to sexual role-playing in suburban Germany; whether reworking Hollywood classics or venturing into the virtual world – this year’s programme is crammed with films which seek to transgress limits of morality, convention or expectation.
Highlights include classics of Hollywood horror, reduced to their essence as single reel 16mm projections in The Sum of All Fears, and a retrospective of Berlin filmmaker Jan Soldat’s unflinching portraits from the world of sado-masochism. Queen of No Wave Lydia Lunch introduces us to the Cinema of Transgression in a unique screening and performance at The Glue Factory, and in two special thematic programmes we look at the Bleeding Edge of digital filmmaking and rage as creative inspiration inAnger Like Fire.
The festival teams up with Edinburgh’s Neu! Reekie! to unveil their Anywhere But The Cities tour film, capturing thirty Scottish poets, musicians and others tackling sixteen shows in twenty-two days across the country. We mark the fifth anniversary of the start of the Syrian conflict with a focus on the work emerging from the beleaguered nation. Glasgow Institute of Architects commission a new film(Re)imagining Glasgow and our collaboration with Scottish Ballet considers what makes a good dance film.
With core Scottish and international competitions, LUX Scotland pitching workshops, and myriad masterclasses, screenings and discussions, expect five heady days foregrounding short film’s potential to push at the boundaries of cultural expression, to establish new forms of storytelling, to shock but also to thrill, question and offer glimpses of new ways of thinking.
